A company called BP was drilling for oil a mile underwater in the
Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf is near Florida. The well broke and the oil
is spilling into the ocean and making the water dirty. The oil can make
the animals and plants die. The company is trying to stop the leak.
The company tried to put a big cap over the well way under the water.
So far it hasn't worked. Crystals of water and gas formed inside the
dome and blocked the flow of oil so the oil can't go up the pipe and
into the ship above. The crystals also made the cap too light and it
made it so the cap couldn't seal against the ocean floor. The oil can
get out the sides.
They don't know what they should try to do next. I think they are
hurting the animals by spilling the oil into the ocean.
